Chocolate, famously known as one of the joys of life, is a unifying sweet that breaks cultural barriers to make lives sweeter. Because of that, it is one of the world’s largest industries, with billions invested in it each year, and it is only expected to continue to grow. However, the chocolate industry has a bitter side to it. Farmers along the Ivory Coast, vital to the growth of these precious fruits, are calling out the treatment and wages they receive from chocolate multinational companies like the United States’ Hershey Company. For generations, the cacao farmers have been overlooked and overworked, and are finally demanding change. However, they find themselves at odds with both political forces and rich multinational enterprises that have no plans to change the status quo. A battle over cacao has emerged, and it threatens to dismantle the entire chocolate empire that has been established. It is up to the delegates in this simulation to come together and take into consideration the needs of both the chocolate companies and the workers that are demanding action, all while determining the future of the chocolate industry in Africa.
